HEAD OF DEPARTMENT’S WELCOME ADDRESS
The Department of Banking and Finance is the youngest of all the departments in Faculty of Management Sciences of the University. Introduced about 14 years ago in 2005, the department commenced operations to particularly cater for the needs of the banking industry and the financial sector of the economy in particular, as well as contribute its quota in nation building through the scholarly activities of provision of the requisite academic and professional training to the future manpower that would be engaged in moving the Nigeria’s economy to greater heights and improved living standards to the generality of it’s populace.
The important role of the financial sector as the catalyst of growth and the heartbeat of the economy further makes the existence of the department most necessary especially with its position as the only department of banking and finance in the whole of the FCT which incidentally is the seat of power and the administrative center of the Nigeria’s government.
For this strategic role it plays and position it occupies makes the quest for excellence our guiding principle; all in to promote and bring out the best in Nigeria by ensuring a the availability of a safe, and sound banking and financial services through the production of a well-disciplined, academically, and professionally sound graduates that will be able and ready to compete within and outside the shores of Nigeria.
I am pleased to report that over the years of its existence the department has successfully graduated hundreds of students commencing from 2009/2010 session to the recent 2017/2018 session with various qualifications ranging from Diploma certificates, now stopped, Bachelors of Science Degrees (BSc); and Postgraduate Diploma program graduating its second batch as at 2017/18 session. Further to the successful Post Graduate Diploma in Banking and Finance (PGDBF), the department is proposing the introduction of two masters programs that would lead to the award of a Master of Science Degree (MSc.) in Banking and Finance, and a professional Master’s degree in Banking and Finance (MBF).
Finally, to enhance our grandaunts and ensure their academic excellence and professional capabilities the department is already in contact with professional bodies such as the CIBN and the Chartered Stock Brokers Institute. By this the department once again calls on the University authority to as a matter of urgency provide a Demonstration bank and a standard departmental students’ library.
HEAD OF DEPARTMENT’S BIOGRAPHY.
Abubakar Sadiq Saleh was born in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State, on April 11th, 1966. Saleh started his education very early at the age of 4 in 1971 and completing same in 1978. After spending 2 years at Government Secondary Gwammaja, he proceeded to the prestigious Rumfa College in 1980 where he sat and obtained the General Certificate of Education in June 1983. Dr Saleh attended the School of Preliminary Studies Kano between 1983 and 1985. In 1985 he joined the Bayero University Kano to study for a bachelor’s degreeprogram in Economics, where he graduated in 1988. After the compulsory NYSC program between 1988 and 1989, Mr Saleh took up a Job as a Planning Officer with the then Directorate of Lands and Regional Planning, Kano. By 1991 Saleh enrolled back into Bayero University Kano, to study for a Master of Science degree in Banking and Finance. He successfully graduated in July, 1992.
Mr Abubakar Sadiq Saleh left state civil service to take up appointment as a Senior Inspection Officer with the National Board for Community Banks, an agency under the Federal Ministry of Finance. He worked for twelve years until 2005 when he took up appointment as an Assistant Lecturer with the department of banking and finance of the University of Abuja. He has since been working as an academic staff with the University of Abuja.
In July, 2011 Mr Saleh left for the United Kingdom to study for a research degree at the University of Huddersfield. He successfully completed the study in October, 2015, bagging a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Finance. Dr Abubakar Sadiq Saleh is currently serving as the Head, Department of Banking and Finance.
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Banking and Finance program took off in 2004/2005 session with an initial enrolment of 91 students, and 4 academic staff; who were responsible for teaching the core courses of the program. Other courses were taught by serving lecturers in Accounting, Business Administration, Public Administration, Economics, Law and General Studies Department.
The department of Banking and Finance has the vision of becoming the leading department of banking in the Nigeria.
Goals, Philosophy, and Objectives
To develop the mind, and impact both theoretical and practical knowledge on the students for the purpose of developing self-confidence, innovation and self-reliance in the field of banking and finance.
The major objectives of the degree program in Banking and Finance are:
- To develop the necessary financial tools that will enable the individual occupy managerial position in government and private sector establishments like banks and other financial institutions, as well as succeed in self-employment.
- To provide general exposure to business and financial studies for under-graduates so as to prepare them for future managerial position.
- To provide academic exposure to the literary foundations and recent developments in the field of Banking and Financial Management.
- To equip the undergraduates with modern techniques for the practice of Banking and Finance.
- To equip students of Banking and Finance with analytical skills needed for recognizing, defining and solving problems as well as training in decision making; and.
- To equip undergraduates with financial management tools for self-employment and personal financial management.
