Centre for Gender Security Studies and Youth Development (CeGSYAd)

WELCOME ADDRESS

Hello visitor,
I am pleased to welcome you to the website of the Centre for Gender Security Studies and Youth Development (CeGSYAd), University of Abuja, Abuja.
This website provides insights into the background of the Centre, nature of programmes, research opportunities, and other interesting information.
Gender issues, more than any period in global history, are becoming more critical to the development of nations; and it is expedient that every individual determined to contribute to this change, should avail themselves of the opportunity provided by a unique institution like ours to advance themselves in this knowledge area.
We run a Postgraduate Diploma programme and Master’s degree programme in Gender Studies both of which are expected to challenge students into learning something new and graduating with practical understanding of gender issues and how they can possibly apply the knowledge and serve as agents of positive change, especially in their homes, immediate environment, workplace and the society at large.
The Centre’s curriculum is carefully structured around core areas of Gender studies, including Governance, media, theory, reproductive health, rights, security, mainstreaming, pedagogy, migration, among others.
We look forward to partnering with national, international and intuitional bodies, agencies of government that are passionate about the ideals and goals of gender issues, and promoting them for human development.

Thank you.

Professor Ekundayo F. Ocholi
Director

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON CeGSYAd
The Centre for Gender Security Studies and Youth Advancement (CeGSYAd) is a product of the Higher Education Link of the tripartite partners; Change Managers International, University of Abuja and University of East London. As a Centre of academic excellence, it operates to link research outputs and documentation to practical policy and community development. It is within this paradigm that we can talk of efforts working towards sustainable development.

The issue of gender discrimination has become endemic. Thus research in this area gender discrimination and the documentation of the results would serve as instrument for educating and socializing the general populace particularly the women. The operation of CeGSSYAd will make to access resources from within and without easy so that the women can use them and improve their educational status. The active role of the Centre will surely assist in the removal of obstacles and constraints imposed on women particularly in education.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE CENTRE
The CeGSYAd operates within the motto of the University which is for “unity and scholarship”. Within this framework, the philosophy of the Centre is to provide practical and innovative education for service and humanity in order to improve the intellectual horizons of the students. Against this backdrop, courses have been structured to improve students’ imagination so as to raise their innovative and creative capacity in the society.

OBJECTIVES OF THE CENTRE
The major objective of the Centre is to strengthen capacity building within the University and communities particularly as it affects gender’s role in Education for All (EFA).
The CeGSYAd is programmed to establish Community Resource Centre in Local Communities so that women, girls and other members of the community can access resources in literacy skills, information and other related skills.
The Centre will promote pro-poor research and encourage the mobility of people between the academia and community. The development of a programme of workshops for seminars and for both the academia and the members of the community will be stressed. The Centre will also function to promote research opportunities on gender related areas such as community development, conflict management, educational policy, social issues, health education, security, mass education and sexual harassment.

The Centre will further provide training opportunities for women and girls from the communities, researchers in the University and Teachers from the localities.
On researching and documenting sexual inequality and sexual harassment, the Centre will make substantial contribution to the international efforts to take HIV/AIDS, sexual inequality and harassment and the Millennium Development Goals.
